Point blank range: pick the target size, get the zero for free

MPBR zeroing turns the bullet’s arc into a window: choose how far the bullet may stray from centre, and the math hands back the zero distance that stretches that window as far as it will go.

Hunters rarely get to range, dial and wait. Point blank range is the zeroing answer to that problem: the stretch of distance over which a centre hold stays inside an acceptable hit zone with no holdover at all. Aim centre, press, hit — from the muzzle out to a distance the math tells you in advance.

How the window works

Take a deer’s 8″ vital zone — ±4″ from the aim point. The maximum point blank range zero arranges the trajectory so the bullet grazes the top of that window at its highest point and exits the bottom of it as late as possible:

  • At the muzzle the bullet starts below the sight line by the height over bore.

  • It climbs through the near zero, peaking no more than 4″ high at maximum ordinate.

  • It falls back through the far zero and keeps dropping.

  • The distance where it reaches 4″ low is the MPBR — the far edge of the window.

Finding yours

    Pick the vital-zone radius for what you shoot: ±4–6″ large game, ±3–4″ medium game, ±1.5–3″ varmints.

    Run a ballistic calculator with your load, BC, velocity and height over bore, plus that radius — it returns the MPBR zero distance and the window.

  3. 3

    Zero at the computed distance (usually 200–260 yards for centrefire rifles).

  4. 4

    Verify on paper at several distances across the window — real trajectories drift from predictions.

When it fits

MPBR shines where distances are unknown and shots are quick: spot-and-stalk, timber hunting, dangerous-game backup. It is the wrong tool where precision dialing is available and expected — long-range steel, competition, tiny targets at distance — because it trades exactness inside the window for speed.
