Your scope sits above the barrel, so the bullet starts below your line of sight and has to climb to meet it. Every number in zeroing follows from that one distance.

A number for how well a bullet fights drag. Higher BC means less drop and less wind drift downrange — and almost nothing inside 100 yards.
Thin air means less drag. A zero confirmed at sea level shoots high in the mountains, and the gap is worth real clicks past 300 yards.
The span where you can hold dead centre and still hit a target of a given size. Choose the size first; the zero distance falls out of it.
Twist stabilises the bullet by length, not weight. A 1:9 barrel that shoots 55gr beautifully can keyhole 77gr — and the group tells you before the box does.
